The Yellow Wallpaper // one-act chamber opera
Lotte and John spend their summer in a colonial mansion in hopes of overcoming Lotte's "fancies" following the birth of their first child. John, Lotte's husband and doctor imposes the infamous 'resting cure' upon his wife, as her fascination for the wallpaper in her room develops.
'The Yellow Wallpaper' is a chamber opera co-created by composer Ana Maria Oancea (RO/NO) and librettist Stephan Teuwissen (CH) inspired by Charlotte Perkins Gilman’s short story titled 'The Yellow Wallpaper', which elegantly tackles the difficult subject of postpartum depression and late-nineteenth century mental healthcare practices, all in the shape of a diary.
